I woke up at around 5:00 after a restless night. It was one of those "it's too warm with a blanket, and too cold without one" nights. As I was packing my things, a large pickup-truck bolted past the 'camping site' with the stereo pumping. Arrgghh... this was the final nail in the coffin. Osoyoos was officially the warmest and crappiest place in Canada.
Soon after scrreeeetch... Bang! Hahaha. The douchebag crashed his pickup into a parked car. As he was obviously speeding, he was unable to make a 90-degree turn. Luckily everyone seemed to be ok, but I've had enough of this place. Onwards to Penticton and my two rest days! I'll head north for a bit and then east again towards Calgary.
Here's the snaps (and more):
A nice farm along the way with this beautiful lake next to the orchards.
Loads of people out cycling. The Half-Ironman was on in two day's time. The Canadian full length Ironman is held in August in Penticton each year, so this is clearly prime triathlon country. Osoyoos just scored a point.
This photo clearly illustrates the contrasting landscape along the route.
On arriving in Penticton, one finds some nice beaches on the north shore of Skaha lake.
A picture of the park next to the 155 km long Okanagan lake. (Penticton is sandwiched between Skaha lake, to the south, and the Okanagan lake, to the north.)
SS Sicamous, which operated on the Okanagan lake during 1914-1937. There's a little stage on the other end where bands were busking.
Gist: An easy day's cycling. My rear-end wasn't feeling too great and my legs still felt like they just cycled up to Manning park, so I was very happy taking two days off to rest up a bit. Luckily I managed to get a new seat and new gears, which offered both a lower and higher gear ration. In layman's terms: uphills would be easier, and downhills faster. Sweet.
While in Penticton I met loads of French-Canadians who were in the area to pick cherries during the summer. The going rate was around $70 for 8-hours of work. Not too sure I would like to do that for 3 months of the year, but it should be an experience.
As for the town, it seemed as a nice enough town, but the main attractions were the fruit and wine farms, and outdoor activities such as cycling and hiking. I felt too tired to put any further strain on my body, so I kept a low profile and enjoyed too many coffee's at the local Starbucks.
